Entry Requirements

Admission is based on academic merit as well as open competition among all eligible applicants.

New ‘A’ Level Curriculum (H1/H2/H3 Subjects)

These are the minimum requirements needed for Singapore ‘A’-Level applicants (regardless of nationality) presenting the new ‘A’ Level curriculum (1.e. H1/H2/H3 subjects):

  • Passes in at least two subjects at H2 Level and offering either General Paper (GP) or Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) in the same sitting.
  • Meet the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement for admission through any of the following:
    • Minimum D7 grade for the higher MTL paper taken at the ‘O’ Level examination.
    • Minimum ‘S’/’D7’ grade for the H1 MTL paper or General Studies in Chinese.
    • Minimum ‘S’/’O’ grade for the H2 MTL paper taken at the ‘A’ Level examination.
    • Pass in the MTL ‘B’ Syllabus paper at the ‘A’ Level examination.

If you are a candidate who has been exempted from MTL as approved by MOE, the MOE-approved subject-in-lieu will be considered as your MTL subject.

If you are unable to fulfil the MTL requirement for admission but satisfy all other admission requirements, you will be admitted on a provisional basis. During your course of study, you will be required to attend the MTL course conducted by the University or attain the minimum requirement as listed above by retaking the MTL paper at the ‘A’ Level examination before graduation.
For the Business Administration and Business Administration (Accountancy) courses specifically, eligible applicants are expected to have read and passed H1 Mathematics or “O” Level Additional Mathematics.

Old ‘A’ Level Curriculum (‘A’/’AO’ results)

These are the minimum requirements for Singapore ‘A’-Level applicants (regardless of nationality) presenting the old Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level qualification for application:

  • Passes in at least two subjects at ‘A’ Level and offering General Paper (GP) at one sitting.
  • Meet the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement for admission through any of the following:
    • A minimum of D7 for the higher MTL paper taken at the ‘O’ Level examination.
    • A minimum of D7 for the ‘AO’ MTL paper, higher MTL or General Studies in Chinese
    • A minimum of ‘O’ grade for the ‘A’ Level MTL paper or higher MTL paper taken at the ‘A’ Level examination.
    • A pass in the MTL ‘B’ Syllabus paper at the ‘A’ Level examination.

If you are exempted from MTL as approved by MOE, the MOE-approved subject-in-lieu will be considered as the MTL subject.

Polytechnic Diplomas from Singapore

Polytechnic students from Singapore, regardless of nationality, who hold a Diploma from any area are highly encouraged and recommended to have a strong mathematics preparation similar to the requirement for A-level students as this will serve as an essential foundation to a business education at NUS. You should also submit your Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-level results, if available. If you are a student in your final semester of study at the Polytechnic, you can apply with your results obtained from your first 5 semesters of study. You should submit your final semester results to the Office of Admissions, NUS as soon as these are available.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

The IB Diploma is a recognised certificate for consideration by NUS for admissions. However for entry into the Business Administration and Business Administration (Accountancy) courses specifically, IB Diploma holders are expected to have read and passed at least Standard Level Mathematics for those taking the IBDP Examination Session November 2020 and earlier or a pass in SL MAA or HL MAI for those taking the IBDP Examination Session May 2021 and beyond. Other subjects like Business Studies might help to give students a slight head start, but are not pre-requisites for entry.

Due to the fact that the IB Diploma is a recent addition to the list of accepted certifications for entry into NUS, the University has yet to be able to publish statistical data on cut-off points on its website. However do feel free to contact the Office of Admissions at (+65) 6516 1010 for more information.

Discretionary/Aptitude – Based Admissions

Vacancies will be set aside to consider exceptional candidates for admission into NUS. For such candidates, other factors besides academic results will be taken into consideration. Applicants should provide details in the “Discretionary/Aptitude – Based Admissions” section on the online application form. Some examples of exceptional achievements that the University may take into consideration are:

  • Medallist in any of the International Olympiads (Biology, Chemistry, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics)
  • Winner at the National Science and Talent Search
  • Representative for Singapore in Arts and/or Sports events
  • Active participation in community service and volunteer programs
  • Work experience relevant to the course applied for
  • Key leadership positions in community organizations, sports and athletic clubs (outside school)
  • Entrepreneur who has started and managed a business

An interview may be required.

Scholarship applicants, Concurrent-Degree applicants, Double-Degree applicants, and applicants for transfer (from within or outside NUS) may be interviewed.

Note: Do maintain a functional email address to facilitate efficient communication. Male applicants from Singapore who will be in National Service will have to maintain this email for two years until registration with NUS (matriculation).

As admission cut-offs tend toward an upward trend, it is advisable for all applicants to indicate, where possible, that they also wish to be considered under Discretionary/Aptitude – Based Admissions.
